Tammy J., Vehicle Repair Supervisor in San Francisco, has worked to maximize her potential by putting the work in every day. After seven years in Daily Rental, she took a pioneering turn to open her region’s CarShare business. Today, she helps the rental teams uphold their safety and compliance, while serving as the ultimate decision maker for fleet repairs.

Read more about how Tammy has learned to celebrate her wins and which groundbreaking professional coach inspires her.

What women inspire you and why?

Becky Hammon, Head Assistant Coach of the San Antonio Spurs. Why? She was the first full-time assistant coach in the NBA, first head coach in NBA summer league history, and became the first acting head coach in the NBA in 2020. Her ability to navigate and advance her career in a male-dominated industry is inspiring. It shows all women that anything is possible in any industry if you put in the work. Over the past few years, we have seen more and more women in these positions. These women are not just opening doors to other women in sports, but in any industry that is male dominated. We belong wherever we want to be.

Who has helped you along your career journey? What have you done to mentor others?

On a personal level, the most important person that has helped me along my career journey is my wife. She has been a part of my journey since I was a Management Trainee, and without her continued support I am not sure I would be where I am.

On a professional level, there have been so many people that helped me along my journey. One of the great things about Enterprise is, people want to see you succeed.

To help mentor others, I reach out to our female employees regularly for check-ins. I dedicate allotted time for questions and answers in every women’s forum, and participate in all of the women’s networking events.

What do you consider your greatest achievement so far in your career?

Throughout my career I have had many successes, which have continued to open pathways for my journey. I honestly believe you can maximize your potential by putting in the work every day.  I’m proud of my time in Daily Rental, which helped prepare me for my next step: opening the Carshare program in San Francisco. There was no handbook for that line of business, which helped me grow as a decision maker and manager and allowed me to take the next step in my career.

In every role I have had, I feel my greatest accomplishments are seeing the successes of the team!  Seeing your team grow and create their own career paths is very rewarding.

What challenges, if any, have you faced as a woman in the workplace and how have you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges I have faced is learning to take my seat at the table.  I always believed my success would speak for itself, but that is not necessarily the case.  It is easy to fall into a place where you are the only woman in the room, so you don’t want to seem arrogant by standing up and boasting about what you have done.

I’ve had to learn that it’s okay to celebrate your wins and share them with those around you.  Understanding I am in my role for a reason and I have earned my spot makes it easier to sit at the table and share my successes. This is what I am here to do, so why wouldn’t I share my wins?  Being confident in my role as a woman is okay!

What makes you feel supported at Enterprise?

One of the most important ways Enterprise has supported me is as simple as them accepting my authentic self.  When I started with Enterprise I could look around and see there weren’t a lot of people like me. It would have been easy to fall in to a place to think “I don’t belong,” but Enterprise exemplified the “Our Doors are Open” founding value and made me feel welcomed. As I continued through my career my region offered Women’s Forums and Women’s Networking events to help create support and growth.
