On Aug. 8 a dry summer fire ignited on the Hawaiian island of Maui and spreading at a rate of one mile per minute, morphed into the deadliest wildfire in modern U.S. history. A week after the fire started, nearly 100 have been confirmed dead and the town of Lahaina has been left in ashes.

In response, the Enterprise Holdings Foundation donated $250,000 to the American Red Cross to support those impacted by the Hawaii wildfires.

"Our deepest sympathies go out to our employees and the people of Hawaii who have lost their homes and loved ones in this unprecedented disaster," Enterprise Holdings Foundation President Carolyn Kindle said. "During this devastating and ongoing crisis, we offer not only our condolences but tangible support to those impacted as they seek safety and shelter and attempt to rebuild their lives."

Early reports indicate the fires damaged or destroyed more than 2,200 structures in Lahaina – most of these were homes – displacing thousands of residents. Hawaii Gov. Josh Green estimates the wildfires inflicted over $5.5 billion worth of damage and said the fires were likely to be the largest natural disaster in the state’s history.

"Our thoughts are with those in need after the devastating wildfires swept through Hawaii," American Red Cross Chief Development Officer Anne McKeough said. "We are so grateful for partners like Enterprise Holdings Foundation as we work together to provide comfort and hope for communities in the wake of these catastrophic wildfires."

While conditions are improving, the Maui blaze was 85 percent contained as of Aug. 14 with new flare-ups in Lahaina and several other areas. The Enterprise Holdings Foundation gift will help the Red Cross, alongside partners, provide food, shelter, water and emotional support.

This donation is in addition to the $1 million the Enterprise Holdings Foundation has donated annually to the Red Cross Annual Disaster Giving Program since 2015 – helping the organization to respond to disasters at a moment’s notice.
